Darling Nikki以来の「リトルプリンス」が再来したーーとニヤニヤしてしまいます。

プリンスワールド全開な曲ですね。あまり深く裏を読まないでサクって和訳してみました。

曲の後半プリンスの一人芝居みたいになっています。この曲でAround the world in a dayのアルバムは終わりです。

今日はプリンスの命日です。月日は早いものです。
昨今大人気のEDMを築き上げた先駆者のAviciiが亡くなられたニュースを今朝見ました。また素晴らしい才能の持ち主がこの世を去ってしまいました。ご冥福をお祈りいたします。

さて、The Ladderはゴスペル調のとても美しい曲と歌詞です。歌詞はプリンスとお父さんのネルソン、音楽はプリンスとリサとウエンディで作りました。美しい前奏はリサとウエンディ作で、 Purple Rain -Deluxeに収録されているOur Destiny / Roadhouse Garden（1984）の冒頭と同じメロディです。

メッセージ色の強い歌詞ですが、音楽は非常にファンキーで盛り上がります。
長いバージョンは２１：４６の長さだそう。
ライブＭＶがとってもカッコイイのでぜひ見てください。プリンスがドラムたたいてます。
プリンスのライブってジェームス・ブラウンの真似ですが、バックバンドにgive me one! ジャン！give me five! ジャンジャンジャンジャン！　みたいにちゃんとみんなプリンスを見て演奏しているところがたまりません。彼らにプロフェッショナルを感じます。

pledge allegianceとは、アメリカ合衆国への忠誠心の宣誓のことであり、しばしば公式行事で暗誦されます。(wikipediaから参照）

私は子供のころ、アメリカの小学校に通っていましたが、そういえば毎朝授業が始まる前に、立って右手を胸に当て、この忠誠の誓いを暗誦させられていました。（現在もあるのかはわかりません）当時は特に疑問もなく、ただ毎朝当たり前のようにしていました。おそらくアメリカ国民には小さいころからこの宣誓は身近にあり、幾度となく聞いているものだと思います。

プロポーズの話やプリンスと一緒に暮らしていたころの話や誕生日のお祝いした時の話などたっぷりと。
やっぱり本当にお互い愛してたんだなーと思いました。

「プリンスは私にすごく言い寄ってきたのよ。とても美しいことをたくさんしてくれたわ。ライオネル・リッチーのツアーに参加していた１９８２年、プリンスはどの場所にいても美しくアレンジされた花を、ツアー期間中毎日贈ってくれた。ツアー期間中よ　---略---　彼はどうやって私をゲットできるのか知っていた。そしてすべての花束にはカードが付いていた」

ファンにはとても人気がある曲ですが、私はどうもこのコーラスの音程がすこしズレているのが心地よくないと感じてしまいます。

メタファー満載の曲です。一言でいうとマスターベーションのことを歌っているんですね。そう考えるとTamborineとはなんのことを指しているのかわかりますね。
